Ever wonder just how Eco-Friendly are MSC Cruises?

According to the 2022 MSC sustainability report, MSC is responsible for over 50% of the cruise industry’s capacity growth, which means MSC has a huge responsibility to bear towards ocean and general environmental health. MSC has stated sustainability is one of their greatest values and that they have one major ecological goal in mind: to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In the same report, MSC stated that they have reduced the carbon emissions on their ship by 33.5% since 2008 and are nearing their goal of a 40% reduction by 2030.
Their newest ships reflect their commitment to utilizing eco-friendly practices by implementing innovative green tech. The MSC World Europa uses LNG (liquefied natural gas) powered fuel cell technology. According to the US Department of Energy, fuel cells are “the most energy-efficient devices for extracting power from fuels.” Fuel cells can convert chemical energy in hydrogen to electricity by passing hydrogen protons through a polymer membrane, which generates a stream of electrons, or electricity. The only byproducts from this method of energy production are water and heat, making fuel cells 100% pollution-free.
MSC has determined that climate change, local air quality and pollution, wastewater treatment and disposal, food waste, plastic use and disposal, and biodiversity are among their most critical priorities regarding their sustainability strategy. Some of MSC’s action plans include removing or replacing non-essential single-use plastics onboard by 2024, reducing waste by 5% per guest day by 2024, and increasing sustainability credentials of short excursions by using third-party tools that assess the biodiversity impacts of operational activities.

MSC continues their vision of increased sustainability with their latest cruise ship, the MSC Euribia. The Euribia was named after the Greek goddess Eurybia, who utilized the winds and constellations to navigate the seas. This is an apt name for this eco-conscious ship, which is powered by carbon-minimal LNG energy.

The MSC Euribia also features a water treatment system in which wastewater is cleaned, so no toxic waste or invasive species are dumped into the ocean. This commitment to the environment is also reflected in the visual design of the ship. The MSC Euibia features artwork on the side of the hull by German artist Alex Flämig, who goes by @undercoverdesign on Instagram. The artwork features the hashtag #savethesea and fun, flat-style illustrations of marine life, a reflection of MSC’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and sustainability transparency. MSC’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and sustainability truly makes you ready to sail aboard their ships.
